Facts about KERR LAKE
Offering over 50,000 acres of fresh water, KERR LAKE (or Buggs Island Lake as folks in Virginia prefer to call it) is truly one of the East Coast's best kept secrets.
WHY? Because the very thing that makes it different from Lake Gaston or Smith Mountain Lake and other fixed-water-level lakes,....its fluctuating water level... has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The government-owned land buffer that surrounds the lake's water protects the water from the ills of development. The shoreline (as viewed from the water) appears natural and undeveloped. Septic systems are pushed back good distances from the water, increasing the chances of the lake's water quality remaining good. And the fluctuating water levels have created beautiful sandy beaches which can be used by all because of the government-owned shorelines. There are hundreds of places on KERR LAKE where one can pull up to an island or sandy beach and spend the afternoon. The fishing is some of the best in the country; the lake is rarely crowded; and the winds are often perfect for sailing. Some fifteen day-use parks offer boat launching ramps, picnicing and swimming areas, and hundreds of campsites.
Within less than thirty minutes, one can drive to the towns of Henderson and Oxford, NC or Clarksville and South Boston, VA. Major highway access via Interstate 85 and North Carolina Hwy 39 and Virginia Hwy 58 make getting to KERR LAKE or going home more convenient than many lake resort locations.
In this day and age of such fast-paced living, it is refreshing to find such a natural area still nearly untouched by urban development and yet located within an hour or two of major metropolitan areas like Raleigh-Durham, NC and Richmond, VA.
So, come find what others have already discovered: the area's best kept secret.......KERR LAKE living.
